Meet Our Director, Changfu Chang
Dr. Changfu Chang is the writer and director of Silent War: Asian American Reckonings with Mental Health. Since 2021, he has been at the heart of this project—traveling across the country, conducting nearly every interview himself, and listening to stories that are rarely told but urgently needed.
When he was first approached during the height of the pandemic, Asian Americans were facing not only the threat of COVID-19 but also a rising tide of anti-Asian hate. What began as a film about mental health quickly evolved into something deeper: a reflection on identity, vulnerability, and the silence that too often surrounds mental illness in Asian American communities.
Over nearly half a decade, Dr. Chang bore witness to stories of trauma, resilience, isolation, and strength—stories shared bravely by individuals who chose to speak out, despite stigma and personal risk. The process became deeply personal for him, blurring the line between filmmaker and participant. As he listened, he saw his own experiences mirrored back. What he captured was not just testimony—it was a collective reckoning.
This film is more than a documentary. It’s a call to compassion, a challenge to stigma, and a testament to what it means to come forward, even when it’s hard. As Dr. Chang says, “They are telling my stories and our stories.”
